Meet Volunteer Position Descriptions

Welcome to the 2024 J-Rays Season! Swim meets can't happen without parent volunteers. We require that every family volunteer at least 3 meets.

This page includes descriptions of all of the meet positions, as well as a training video for the scorekeeper.

* We will host volunteer training before the Time Trials on June 2, 2024 (Juniors and Seniors) at 8:00am.

Timer (6 per meet)

Timers stand at the end of the pool and use a pushbutton to determine the time of a swimmer. Multiple family members can share this role, but at least 1 adult must be prepared to stay for the entire meet. This is best suited for families with swimmers aged 7 and up.

Runner (2 per meet)

Runners get papers from the pool to the scoring table. This is a role that is best suited with swimmers of all ages. Runners also may be asked to assist in other tasks throughout the meet as needed.

Stroke & Turn

This is a certified position. Getting certified is free and only an hour of your time but it must be completed prior to the season. Stroke and Turn judge stands at the edge of the pool to judge whether the swimmers are using the proper starts, stroke techniques, turns, and finishes during each event. Best suited for a parent who is at least minimally familiar with rules of swimming and you must be able to stay until the end of the meet.

Ribbon Writer

The Ribbon Writer sits at a table, with another volunteer and fills out names on the back of the ribbons that are awarded to the swimmers. This is best suited for someone with swimmers of all ages, but you must be prepared to stay for the entire meet.

Starter/Announcer (Home Meets Only)

The Starter / Announcer stands near the starting blocks on the side of the pool and is responsible for starting each heat, “Swimmers take your mark, beep!” This position needs to be able to speak clearly and will need to be trained on the starting system. Must be able to stay for the entirety of the meet.

Kid Pusher (4 per meet)

Kid Pushers are responsible for aligning swimmers for each event by heat and lane, then escort swimmers from the designated area to start blocks. This is a key position to keeping the meets running timely and a really good way to get to know the kids.

Clerk of Course (2 per meet)

The Clerk of Course checks and double checks that the correct kids are in the correct lanes for each stroke. This position is best suited for a veteran swim parent.

Heat Ribbon Distributor (Home Meets Only)

The Heat Ribbon Distributor passes out heat participation ribbons for the 6 & Under and Junior heats.

Water Runner (Home Meets Only)

The Water Runner distributes water to meet volunteers and meet officials.
